Shingles (shingles fire)

It is a variety of herpes that manifests itself acutely and is caused by the same chickenpox virus, which "awakens" even after many years. It nestles in the spinal nerve ganglia, giving rise to a particular manifestation, with localized pain and burning; within a day or two, vesicular lesions then appear in the area of the intercostal nerves, the brachial plexus, the trigeminal nerve and the sciatic nerve.

The vesicles appear grouped on one side of the body and break a week after the appearance, leaving a brown spot. There is also a form that affects the eyes (ophthalmic herpes), rare and serious for the ocular complications that arise.

In general, the exacerbation of the virus in those affected by chickenpox is due to particular conditions (exposure to the sun, physical exertion and great tiredness, therapies with cortisone drugs and so on). The therapy involves taking antiviral drugs (aciclovir) which are also able to decrease the chances of a subsequent neuralgia.
