Diagnosis

The diagnosis of alopecia is the result of a careful clinical examination, completed by the patient's medical history (focusing on the causes of the pathology that agree with the characteristics of the alopecic patch). If necessary, serum androgen levels (testosterone, dihydrotestosterone), thyroid and parathyroid hormones are measured. In rare cases, a cutaneous fragment is taken from the affected area and a histological or immunological investigation is performed, or electron microscopy of the hair; sometimes the execution and interpretation of the trichogram is of great importance.
